A Yorkshire Family
Alfred Tiffany
Alfred's Story
Alfred was born on the 27th of November 1854 in Rothwell to George and Elizabeth Tiffany. He was one of eight children and lived and worked, pretty much all of his life in and around Rothwell, working as a Coal Miner (Hewer) in one of the many mines in the Rothwell area.
In 1874 he married Elizabeth Chadwick and together they had 9 children. Sadly his wife died in 1892 from Consumption (Tuberculosis) at the young age of 35, leaving him to bring up his children on his own, he never re-married. A lot of the burden of running the family home and looking after the younger members of the family fell on the eldest of his daughters who were still living in the family house at the time of Sarah's death.
Alfred was a keen cricketer and played as a wicket keeper for Rothwell Cricket Club. It was said that he also liked a drink. After all Alfred's children were married he gave up his house in Jail Yard and went to live with his son, Charles, and his wife. However, after they had a fall out, Alfred moved into his own house in Marsh Street.
When Alfred became old and needed care he gave up his house in Marsh Street and his children took it in turns to look after him. This is why he died in Littleborough, Lancashire where his daughter Ethel was living with her husband. He was brought back to Rothwell and was burried in Rothwell Churchyard.
